GSC GOLF INVITATIONAL The
Invitational is a two-man scramble golf tournament and the largest fundraising
event that ABAA sponsors. It is the anchor and centerpiece of the Groomes Spring
Classic weekend. The Invitational kicks off every year with the GSC Calcutta Cocktail
Party, where tournament participants and spectators come together to have fun
and wager on the tournament field of golfers. All teams are handicapped according
to their skill level, which creates a level playing field for all participants.
The annual clash begins the following day.
For Calcutta Cocktail Party Information,CLICK HERE The venue for the tournament changed again from Stoney Creek Golf Club to Country
Hills Golf Club, due to renovations to the Stoney Creek facility. The Miller
brothers were the low handicap team and again they had the bulls eyes on their
backs. Team Lima and Team Miller engaged in an epic battle throughout the day.
The Limas put the pressure on early and eagled the par 5, 10th, but the Millers
made their strong statement when they birdied the #1 handicap hole, #11 “The
Inverted Bowl Hole”, which set the tone for the back nine. It was close, but
the Limas held off the Millers and pulled out the win.
2009 - Stoney Creek Golf Club
The venue changed from Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center to Stoney Creek Golf Club. The weather was warm and windy and the Miller brothers were on the hunt
to defend their title, but the Tim Vangel/Kory Kinnear team could not be denied.
The Vangel/Kinnear team jumped out in front of everyone after nine holes and
never looked back to grab the first place trophies.
2008 - Bryan Park Golf Club (Players Course) Year two brought out a larger field of golfers, but that didn’t stop former
pitcher, Charles Miller, and his brother, Kellen Miller from cruising to an
easy first place finish with a low score of 64.
2007 - Bryan Park Golf Club (Players Course)
The Inaugural battle was on a cold and windy April day that ended in a tie
between a team of former pitchers, Cory Lima and Tim Vangel, and a team of former
coaches, Richard Watkins and Keith Henry. The tie was broken with a lower score
by the Watkins/Henry team on the low handicap hole making them the champions. The highlight
of this tournament was when the Chris Leonard/Karlton “K.J.” Little
team obtained the third place finish in dramatic fashion by dropping a 40-foot
putt, on the 17th green to edge out former Aggie infielders, George Lima and
Derrick Carter.
